The Reality of Building Desktop Apps with Tauri

When you build a desktop app with Electron (like Slack or VS Code), you are essentially bundling an entire Chromium browser and Node.js runtime into your app. This guarantees consistency, but results in a "Hello World" app taking up 150MB of RAM and 200MB of disk space. Users were complaining our utility app was draining their laptop batteries.

The Tauri Promise

We looked at Tauri. Instead of bundling Chromium, Tauri uses the OS's native webview (WebKit on Mac, WebView2 on Windows). And instead of Node.js for the backend, it uses Rust. The promise? Tiny bundle sizes and blazing fast performance.

The Good: It Actually Works

The results were staggering. Our installer dropped from 120MB to 8MB. Memory usage went from 200MB down to 35MB. Our frontend team kept writing React for the UI, while our backend engineer wrote the file-system access logic in Rust. The IPC (Inter-Process Communication) bridge between JavaScript and Rust was highly secure and intuitive.

The Painful: Webview Inconsistencies

Because Tauri relies on the OS webview, we suddenly had to care about browser compatibility again. A CSS grid layout that looked perfect on macOS Safari (WebKit) suddenly had weird alignment issues on an older Windows 10 machine running an outdated WebView2. We lost the "Write Once, Run Exactly the Same" guarantee that Electron provided.

Conclusion

If you are building a heavy, complex IDE or graphic editor, stick to Electron—you need the guaranteed V8 consistency. But if you are building a system utility, a chat app, or a lightweight dashboard, Tauri is the undisputed future. The battery and memory savings are just too good to ignore.
